The regional capital of Maribor in the North East of the country is distinctive to its location. It is the economic centre of the region and has been at the junction of important traffic routes from central Europe to the south-east for many centuries.

On the banks of the river Drava, Maribor has experienced ups and downs in its thousand years of history - even defending the western border of the Ottoman Empire. Now, the region around the city is building its international reputation for wine which, by all accounts, is very fine indeed.
