Slovenia - Postojna

If caves and rock faces are your bag, then there is no better place to head tin Slovenia than the town of Postojna in the South-West of the country. This is a region with extensive natural underground passages that were home to our Stone Age ancestors from a period of time believed to be one million years ago.

The most famous cave is over 20 kilometers in length and is known to have its own unique species of lizards and insects. It has been a popular tourist attract since the late 1800s when it was lit for the first time with an electrical lighting system which, still today, illuminates the stalactite and stalagmite formations.

It is clear that the cave have been adopted as part of the homes and the way of life of the local peoples from an early age, a fact best illustrated by Predjama castle (Predjama literally means before the cave) which is a large medieval castle built in the mouth of a much larger cave.
