Nearly in the shadow of Triglav, the lake of Bled is home to Slovenia’s top tourist attraction: The only island in Slovenia is in the middle of it. This island in hallowed throughout Slovenian history and all way back to the ancient Slavs who worshipped Živa, the Slavic goddess of love and fertility.

Later, in order to rid the area of pagans, the church of St. Mary was built here in replacement of their heathen ways and still stands today.

The town on the banks of the lake (also called Bled) attracted the European aristocratic league as a spa town with healing waters and outstanding natural beauty.
