Slovenia - Ljubljana

Despite being the European capital that is the most difficult to pronounce, Ljubljana is most probably the smallest capital in Europe with only a quarter of a million inhabitants. In the light of this, do not expect to arrive here and be awestruck by the scale of the architecture or nightlife. Expect instead a pleasant weekend in the company of friendly people and a few brief walks along the river and to the town square.

The city lies at the foot of a hill upon which Ljubljana Castle sits and is intersected by the Ljubljanica River, which is comfortably bridged in several places through the town centre.

Being their capital, Slovenians are most proud of the city as the centre for their culture and there is a lively cultural life here, created by numerous theatres, museums, and galleries, one of the oldest Philharmonics in the world, more than ten thousand cultural events each year and as many as ten international festivals.

The university in the city breathes a lot of life into the city providing a lively youthful character but you will find it easy to relax. Why not try a boat ride on the Ljubljanica River, a stroll in Tivoli Park, a visit to the Botanical Garden, a walk in the Ljubljana Zoo, a guided tour of Plečnik’s architecture that is evident throughout the city, or the trails to nearby Rožnik Hill or one of the other friendly peaks around the city.
